We've been quiet for a while--meeting in real life and supporting each others creative endeavors. We recently met up for a weekend retreat where planning for summer events got underway.

A "you won't want to miss" rare opportunity

This beautiful, collaborative room divider houses eighteen one-of-a-kind sculptures, paintings, photographs and fiber artworks. Each of the eighteen pieces, which were created by eight talented Door County artists, features two unique, diverse sides (front and back images are shown in the left and right photos, respectively).

The entire pieces was inspired by the intimate, soulful song Tribute to Grace, written and sung by Women Create member Jana Holland.

The collaborative room divider is currently on display at the Fairfield Art Museum in Sturgeon Bay, WI through Sept. 3. At that time it will be moved to Off the Wheel Pottery in Egg Harbor where it will be auctioned as a benefit to Sunshine House, Inc. The winning bidder will receive this beautiful piece and a complimentary CD featuring Jana Holland performing Tribute to Grace, all at a tax deductible purchase price, while supporting a beloved Door County non-profit.

Though art actions are not uncommon in Door County, the opportunity to purchase a collaborative piece created by nine Door County artists is unique. To learn more about this group of emerging and established artists scroll down below where you fill find each artist's bio.

Pre-auction bids will be accepted beginning Sept. 3 and ending Sept. 16 at 7pm. To bid, call Off the Wheel Pottery at 920-868-9608.

The Silent Auction will take place on Sept. 16, 2006 during Art in the Barn, an all day art fair featuring the art work of the nine Women Create members, on the lovely grounds of Off the Wheel Pottery. The day will conclude with an outdoor concert by Jana Holland at 7pm ($10 suggested donation requested to support the musician).

Mary Bosman

Mary Bosman

Mary is a Door County native and has painted all her life. She is primarily self- taught but has taken classes with Ramon Kelley and Emmett Johns. She has exhibited in invitational and juried exhibits, including the Oil Painters of America and Midwest Pastel Society juried shows, for over twenty years. Her work is in many private and corporate collections. In 2001, her artwork was chosen to be in the Ridges Sanctuary "Celebrating Door County's Wild Places".

Along with her husband, Peter Bosman, she recently opened Bosman Studio and Gallery, located on Oxford Ave. in Sturgeon Bay, WI.

Mary's paintings reflect her love of light and color, which to her are spiritual qualities present in the woods, dancing off the water and sand, and the light of the sky.

Rosie Dittmann

Rosie Dittmann

Rosie Dittmann has been working with fiber most of her life, starting with knitting at age 8. She moved onto spinning, weaving, and most recently felting. She has studied with international felt artists from the U.S., New Zealand, and Russia. After grounding herself in the technicalities of fiber technique and gaining a thorough understanding of the qualities of wool, she now tries to push its limits creatively. She says of her work, "Fiber crafts link us to every age, every culture and every continent and felting is one of the oldest."

Her inspiration comes from the fiber itself, its texture and color. Her often serendipitous images are inspired by nature and the four seasons.

She is currently represented exclusively by Whitefish Bay Farm Gallery, Sturgeon Bay WI.

Joan Meiselman

Joan Meiselman

Joan Meiselman has been weaving for forty years. She received her B.F.A. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1972. Her work has been exhibited nationally in numerous jured art fairs and festivals. She has lived in many interesting places, including southern California, and northern New Mexico and currently resides near Algoma, WI.

Living in a small house surrounded by her beautiful gardens, in the middle of farm country, she is influenced by the natural cycles of the seasons: moonlight on snow, sunlight on water, and the wind over farm fields. The light outside her studio windows is always shifting color, the reflections of which are visible in her rag rugs, scarves, and other functional work.

Joan enjoys the knowlege that the color and textures of her rag rugs will find themselves under the bare feet of people doing dishes or snuggling up next to a roaring fireplace and that her scarves will warm many necks during chilly northern winters.

Jana Holland

Jana Holland, Singer/Songwriter

Jana performs her melodic folk/rock originals in all sorts of venues-- from homeless shelters to festivals, coffee houses to private house concerts. She offers an emotional, intellectual, and spiritual response to deeply moving issues as she chronicles her life journey through musical memoirs. Jana's songs are full of depth, character and an underlying sense of Peace.

Frances Holt

Frances Holt is a creative photographer, born in England, who has traveled extensively and is now based in Sturgeon Bay,WI, where she is renovating an old log house. She studied home economics and food photography before cooking on board a private yacht and sailing the world.

Always with a camera, she shoots color and black and white 35 mm film. She has recently begun taking digital images with a Canon EOS 30d. She is inspired by the revolving seasons and beautiful sunsets in Door County. As a well traveled foreigner living in rural America she has a unique perspective on Door County.

Frances received honorable mention in the juried photography show at the Door County Maritime Museum in Sept 2002 and had photographs selected for the 2002 and 2004 juried art shows at the Miller Art Museum in Sturgeon Bay.

Angela Lensch

To Angela, art is a way of life, an extension of the self. She creates from the heart, free of words that may limit ideas, from a place of peace and knowing. The strength and balance of the wild are reflected in her furniture, sculpture and jewelry. She encourages viewers to touch her smooth, elegant work and to view them as a meditative tools.

Steel, gemstones, feather, hide and leather are just a few of the materials she uses in her one-of-a-kind, three-dimensional work. She also uses wood gathered from fallen trees, or collected from areas that were cleared for development or trimmed for power lines, salvaging as much possible so the trees can continue to touch our lives.

She says of her work, "Nature is my creative igniter, my motivation, and my greatest teacher. It is my hopes that by viewing my work you experience a moment of calm and peace and are for an instant, at one with all, and present."

Angela received her BFA at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design with a double major in furniture design and sculpture in Dec 2001. She was recently featured in the summer issue of Door County Living magazine.

Renee' Schwaller

Renee' Schwaller creates functional, colorful pottery with playful designs. She works in the studio at her home, where she draws inspiration from the things that bring her joy-- her family and her surroundings. She teaches at The peninsula Art School and exhibits at numerous art shows across the state.

Renee' has her B. A. in communications from The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Her studies in pottery began after working at The Potters Wheel Gallery in Fish Creek, WI. She studied pottery at the University of Minnesota-Minneapolis and the University of Hawaii.

Awards include the purchase of two large pieces for the permanent collection at Northwestern Technical College, Green Bay, WI. in 2004, a merit award at Art Street in 2001 and an honorable mention at The Hardy Gallery in 1998.

Carol Morgan

Carol Morgan

Carol Morgan, Ph.D., is a fiber artist who established Wild Onions Studio, located on the beautiful shores of Green Bay waters, in 1998 after falling in love with fiber and the papermaking process.

She approaches her creative process from two perspectives: nature; and as a licensed professional counselor with 23 years experience. She loves to observe nature, work in abstracts and takes her palette and textures from nature. She is also inspired by her clients' healing journeys and own life experiences.

She uses the Asian fiber (Kozo) to make paper, similar to the processes to of the Chinese in 105 A.D. and Western fibers (cotton, abaca, hemp) inspired by 16th Century European papermakers. It is labor intensive and meditative. She selects the fibers that create translucent or highly textured artwork. She also makes her own watercolors and acrylic paints.

Shan Bryan-Hanson

Shan Bryan-Hanson creates intimate, vibrant oil paintings that are inspired by everyday life. Her love of color is a major inspiration for her work, as is her interest in the simplicities and complexities of our daily lives.

In 1998 she received her M.F.A. from the University of Montana. She now lives and works in Sturgeon Bay, WI. In 2004 she was chosen as one of the Peninsula Art School's Emerging Artists. In 2005 two of her paintings were purchased through the juried Direct Purchase Program of the Wisconsin Arts Board and her project 549 Louisiana St. (and Slightly Beyond) was awarded a grant from the Peninsula Arts Association and the Wisconsin Arts Board.
